Laurie Shaffer
MS, CI & CT, NIC-A earned her BA from Hamilton College with a major in Fine Arts. She went on to complete her masters in Education of the Deaf at Syracuse University. For 15 years, she provided interpreting services throughout Massachusetts as well as nationally. She is a former adjunct faculty member at Northeastern University’s Interpreter Education Program and has been teaching workshops and seminars since 1994. For the past 3 summers she has been an instructor at NUIEP’s Summer Symposium and involved with various research initiatives with the National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers. From 1997 to 2005 Laurie was coordinator of Services for the D/deaf and Hard of Hearing at Boston University and Director of the Boston University Center for Interpreter Education (BUCIE). Laurie is a founding member of the Conference Interpreting Mentorship Project and co-developer with Wendy Watson of the Peer Mentor Model; a mentoring paradigm and program design presented at the 2004 Conference of Interpreter Trainers. In all of her endeavors, she has strived to foster team-building, cross-cultural awareness, and collegial respect, creating positive change for the field. Laurie now resides in rural Central Virginia with her husband and best friend, her corgi and her kitty. She has 2 fabulous adult children.
