| MJ Bienvenu is the coordinator of the ASL program at Gallaudet University and is finishing up her Ph.D. at The Union Institute. She grew up in Louisiana in an all-Deaf family, and attended the Louisiana State School for the Deaf. She holds a bachelors degree in English and a masters in Linguistics from Gallaudet University. She is bilingual in American Sign Language and written English. She has presented hundreds of classes and workshops in English, American Deaf culture, Characteristics of Oppressed and Oppressor People, Bilingual/Bicultural Education, and Deaf interpreter issues. MJ is well known as an ASL model, teacher and advocate for the recognition of Deaf people as a linguistic and cultural minority. | |
