Workshop Topics: Deafblind Community Interpreting

Janet K. Marcous has had over twenty years experience working within the Deafblind Community as a counselor, advocate, workshop presenter, teacher, and group facilitator. Janet's particular expertise is in the interpersonal dynamics surrounding loss, the grieving cycle, and how it applies to the loss of sight for a person who is deaf. She is teaching a required course at Northeastern University, Introduction to the Deafblind Community, exploring the lives and lifestyles of people who are deaf-blind. This includes an introduction to Deafblind interpreting, the study of culture, and communication styles; as well as specific issues surrounding oppression, mobility, vulnerability, empowerment and empathy. Deafblind, herself, Janet appears at teaching engagements with her guide dog.
