Educational Opportunities >> Graduate Certificate in Interpreter Education Master Mentor

Mentors are specialized educators who know how to guide adult learners in a process of professional self-discovery. Interpreters paired with mentors can work on particular issues they are facing. Usually, there is an immediate benefit in terms of skill growth, but in addition, interpreters who are mentored begin to lay foundations for their own long-term skill improvement. That is because with good mentorship they have learned how to learn. They know how to assess their own skill levels and how to set specific targets for themselves that are directly related to the enhancement of their work lives. Interpreters can also help others to lay those foundations when they begin to mentor each other.

The Master Mentor certificate program prepares interpreters and interpreter educators to serve as "mentors" for interpreters at all skill levels. "Mentors" are those experienced interpreters who provide support and direction to newly graduating and less experienced interpreters, helping them make the transition from undergraduate education programs to the working environment.

Applicants to this program must be able to produce DVDs from tapes/digital recordings of their interpreting and language work. QuickTime or Windows Media player format required.

This program is offered through Northeastern University's College of Professional Studies (CPS). If you would like to read more, please click here to visit the Graduate Certificate in Interpreter Education Master Mentor page.

You can also visit the CPS website for financial aid information.

Needs Assessments
The Deaf Consumer Needs Assessment Report serves as a starting point for understanding the current and projected needs of deaf consumers as they relate to the availability, quality and overall use of interpreter services. The Phase I Deaf Consumer Needs Assessment effort was designed as only the first in a series of on-going activities planned by NCIEC to collect input from deaf consumers. The Phase II Deaf Consumer Needs Assessment is being conducted now across the country in face to face interviews with Deaf Consumers.

Effective Practices
The National Center is charged with a leadership role in identifying effective practices, both existing and those to emerge through NCIEC projects and activities. The goal is to identify effective practices and produce guidelines, benchmarks, milestones and assessment measures to guide others in future replications of, and improvements to, those practices.
