INTERPRETER EDUCATION MASTER MENTOR CERTIFICATE PROGRAM (MMCP)
Important Dates
MMCP Classes will begin in January, 2009. The deadline for application is October 15 or until the class is full.
Program Overview
Mentors are specialized educators who know how to guide adult learners in a process of professional self-discovery. Interpreters paired with mentors can work on particular issues they are facing. Usually, there is an immediate benefit in terms of skill growth, but in addition, interpreters who are mentored begin to lay foundations for their own long-term skill improvement. That is because with good mentorship they have learned how to learn. They know how to assess their own skill levels and how to set specific targets for themselves that are directly related to the enhancement of their work lives. Interpreters can also help others to lay those foundations when they begin to mentor each other.
The MMCP curriculum was built around the concept of learning as discovery, a pedagogy that requires students to take on the risky process of self-challenge and personal investment in skill development. The courses make available the best current understanding of the processes and functions of mentoring. They lead students beyond surface understanding of the tasks and activities of mentoring in general, to an intimate understanding of the private and personal tasks they need to undertake to grow as mentors, to become in fact Master Mentors. Each course is built around a “learn-by-doing” approach and takes students through the difficulties and triumphs adults experience when they agree to climb on to a new leaning curve. By going through the challenge and struggle that produces self-development, these future mentors are learning how to guide that growth process in others.
The Master Mentor Certificate Program provides opportunities and learning for professional interpreters and interpreter educators who want to become mentors and serve as mentors within their communities. The courses in this curriculum focus on the knowledge and skills necessary for effective mentoring. The Master Mentor Certificate program identifies and trains interpreters and interpreter educators to serve as mentors for interpreters at all skill levels. Courses from this certificate may be applied toward the Adult and Higher Education Concentration in the Master of Education.
Applicants to this program must be able to produce DVDs from tapes/digital recordings of their interpreting and language work. QuickTime or Windows Media player format required.
