Cathy Cogen
Director Regional Interpreter Education Center, Instructor
A long-time member of the Northeastern University faculty and professional staff, Cathy Cogen is currently the director of the Regional Interpreter Education Center for New England and an adjunct instructor of ASL/English interpreting. She was the first director of the Northeastern University American Sign Language Program. Under her leadership, two ASL courses grew to a full program of instruction in the language and culture of the Deaf Community. Cathy was instrumental in the design and implementation of the University College certificate programs in ASL and interpreting, and the development of the bachelor's degree program in ASL/English Interpretation. She won the first Interpreter Education Project grant in 1985. While she left full-time employment at the University in 1986, she continued her association with the Program and the Project as part-time faculty and consultant. She returned to the University in her present position in 1996.
During her hiatus from the University, Cathy consulted to the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, researching and authoring a report and five-year development plan to increase the availability and quality of interpreting services in Massachusetts. She also began her long-standing involvement in the Conference of Interpreter Trainers (CIT) Educational Standards Committee, on which she served as member and chair. She served three years on the Board of Directors as a Regional Representative. Her primary focus has been the development of the CIT National Interpreter Education Standards and an accreditation process for interpreter education programs. The Standards may be viewed on the CIT web site at http://www. cit-asl.org. An article describing the history of the Standards and the program self-study review process appears in the Proceedings of the 1999 Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf National Convention, co-authored by Cathy Cogen and Elizabeth A. Winston.
While serving as MassRID President from 1982-1984, Cathy found that she enjoys working alongside Deaf and Deaf-Blind colleagues and friends in advocating for improved accessibility and services. From the passage of Section 585 of the Acts and Resolves of 1983 ("The Deaf Rights Bill") to the appropriation of state dollars in 2000 for the newly established Deaf-Blind Community Access Network, she has co-led and supported lobbying efforts that further the communities' social service and political goals.
Cathy holds a Bachelors degree in linguistics from the University of California at Berkeley and a Masters degree in educational administration from Northeastern University. She is a certified interpreter and SCUBA diver, occasionally seen using both skills simultaneously.
