Screening/Certification
Interpreter credentials vary from state to state. In Massachusetts there are two ways in which interpreters can get work through the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Referal Department.
The first of these is by taking the Massachusetts State Screening. This is a two part test (interview and interpretation skills analysis). Part one (interview) must be taken and passed before part 2 can be scheduled. To sign up for the screening please contact the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing for a screening packet. You can visit the Commission's website at www.state.ma.us/mcdhh or contact Colin Paget at Colin.Paget@state.ma.us to request a screening packet.
Interpreters should then test for national certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and the National Association of the Deaf. For more information about the national exam please go to http://www.rid.org/nic.html.
Northeastern is a Supersite and offers the written and performance exams on site. Please refer to the RID website for the name of Northeastern's Local Test Administrator (LTA).
