Project TIEM.Online,
with support from a Department of Education grant (#H160C030001),
has been developing a set of domains and competencies needed
by effective interpreting educators. These have been developed
based on research, interviews with leaders and experts in interpreting,
teaching, and curriculum development.
We are asking for
your input and feedback on these competencies as we revise
and enhance them. If you are a current or prospective educator
of interpreting and/or ASL, an interpreter, or a consumer of
interpreting services, we value your thoughts and insight on
our work so far.
After revision, these
will be used to build the new Master’s Degree in Teaching
Interpreting program to be offered at Northeastern University
beginning September 2005.
The MA Degree:
We will begin accepting applications for the Master’s
Degree in early spring 2005. We encourage all interpreters
to apply, including deaf interpreters, those working with diverse
multicultural, rural, and other under-served interpreter populations.
Our
goal is to offer a program that encourages reflective, learning-centered
approaches to preparing interpreters. Participants will have the opportunity
to learn about working in an academic environment, teaching interpreting,
mentoring, evaluating their own teaching, and conducting research
into effective teaching practices in interpreting.
Our courses
are delivered in an online environment, which allows people
from across the nation to participate. All communication
for the course takes place via bulletin board postings and
email. Our lectures are presented in ASL and then sent out
to students on CD-ROM.
