MA: Interpreting Pedagogy Courses:

YEAR 1: Fall quarter
ED 3211: Foundations of Post-Secondary Teaching
ASLG 3200: Language Foundations for Teaching Interpreting
Explores the first and second language fluencies required for effective interpreting, including discourse types, linguistic features, and issues of language use across diverse communities.

YEAR 1: Winter Quarter
ED 3213: Curriculum Development/Instructional Design
ASLG 3210:   Foundations of Meaning Transfer
Explores approaches to teaching theories and trends in meaning transfer for interpreting, especially related to discourse-based translation approaches. Students will design and prepare teaching units (workshops, modules, courses) that incorporate reflective teaching practices.

YEAR 1: Spring Quarter
ED 3230: Assessment and Testing/Evaluation
ASLG 3215: Translation I
Examines the design, preparation, presentation, and assessment of teaching about interpreting time-shifted interactions. These interactions include: translations, video, site translation, theatrical, religious, hospital admission forms (inquiry, expository, procedural, persuasive)


YEAR 2: Fall Quarter
ASLG 3245 : Research Methods and Techniques
ASLG 3220: Translation II
Continues and expands the discussions and applications of ASLG 3215: Translation I. Students will begin to apply action research practices in their design, teaching, and assessment work.

YEAR 2: Winter Quarter
ASLG 3225: Ethical and Professional Foundations
Explores approaches to teaching interpreting content courses, including such topics as preparing professional and ethical practitioners; topics and settings in interpreting, issues in the field of interpreting, and other content-related topics. Students will design and prepare teaching units (workshops, modules, courses) that incorporate reflective teaching practices and will apply action research practices in their work.
ASLG 3230: Simultaneous Interpreting I
Examines teaching approaches for simultaneous interpreting. Students will prepare to teach about simultaneous interpreting needs for a variety of discourse types, such as inquiry, expository, procedural, persuasive types of discourse. Reflective practices and action research will be incorporated into these activities and topics.

YEAR 2: Spring Quarter
ASLG 3235: Teaching Practicum
Provides an opportunity for students to apply and practice reflective teaching in courses, workshops, and other educational settings.
ASLG 3240: Simultaneous Interpreting II
Continues and expands the discussions and applications of ASLG 3230: Simultaneous Interpreting I. Students will apply action research practices in their teaching practices and work.
ASLG 3245: Research/Capstone Portfolio
Provides the opportunity to assemble a portfolio and reflect on the learning and teaching that students have experienced throughout their program. Students register for this course during the final quarter, but they begin preparation of the portfolio from the beginning of the program.
